The Honda NSX Type R, is a high performance, limited edition version of the NA1 Honda NSX. It was introduced in the 1992 model year and available exclusively in Japan. The Type R emphasized performance through drastic weight savings, it is 265lbs lighter than the standard NA1 Coupe. In addition, Honda also improved the suspension, engine, and chassis which made the car better suited for high performance closed circuit use. Just 483 examples of the Honda NSX Type R were built before the end of production in 1995. The example featured here is car number 168, finished in Championship White with gray alcantara interior and red seats. This Type-R was optioned with the Bose sound system, air conditioning, larger wheels, and has travelled 7,566 miles. Extensive service documentation, owners manual , and factory tools are also well preserved with this NSX-R.
Driving and overall impressions:
The Honda NSX R is a bucket list car for me, however this list is a long one for not only myself, but for many automotive enthusiasts. Over the years many cars that are more readily available come to mind and thus I begin to research the history of the cars and start searching for potential candidates to acquire. That is my process and i'm pretty good at it; according to my wife I'm a "GREAT acquirer," LOL!! So about a year ago I went for an early morning drive and while at a stop light, a red Honda NSX glides slowly to a stop right next to me. The right hand drive example quickly reminded me of the NSX R and down the proverbial rabbit hole I went. The internet led me to you tube which led me to instagram which lead me to an all out search for the RIGHT NSX R to acquire. There are very few candidates available globally and when one becomes available, elation oftentime gives way to disappointment during the due diligence process and the search continues. This is actually part of the fun as many will attest to.... The Honda NSX R featured here is an impeccable low mileage example; not a stone chip, fastidiously maintained, and very well documented. It took a year to find and it was finally in our possession.
I took hold of the Monel key and started the Honda and you are quickly reminded it's a Honda. There is no drama, no overwhelming exhaust note, press a button and the air conditioning system quickly cools the cabin and the red Alcantara carbon kevlar seats that hold you firmly in place, offer excellent support. Commence the drive and you realize there is no power steering but it does not matter, the steering lightens up as soon as the car begins to move. The communicative steering complements the short throw gear shift amazingly well and driving on the right side of the car becomes second nature fairly quickly. Now this car wasn't bought to drive Miss Daisy, put the hammer down and let's figure out what all the fuss is about... and that I did. On a straight line the car comes alive at the top of the rev range, unsurprisingly so given the VTEC-engine. Experience the progression of power while driving on a winding road, upshift, and place the car right on the white line and it all comes together. This is a canyon carving surgical instrument, not a sledge hammer. The NSX R can be used to run errands around town, and offers the civility of many modern sports cars; however, this car belongs on a closed circuit track where it can really be used in the way it was intended. I guarantee this car will not disappoint
