The Honda NSX Type R, is a high performance, limited edition version of the NA1 Honda NSX. It was introduced in the 1992 model year and available exclusively in Japan. The Type R emphasized performance through drastic weight savings, it is 265lbs lighter than the standard NA1 Coupe. In addition, Honda also improved the suspension, engine, and chassis which made the car better suited for high performance closed circuit use. Just 483 examples of the Honda NSX Type R were built before the end of production in 1995. The example featured here is car number 430, finished in Championship White with gray alcantara interior and red seats. This Type-R was optioned with the Bose sound system, air conditioning, white roof, and has travelled 17,293 miles. Extensive service documentation, owners manual , and factory tools are also well preserved with this NSX-R.
Judging by its overall condition, and extensive service file, the Honda NSX R featured here has been fastidiously maintained and enjoyed by its previous owner.
As we took delivery of this Honda NSX R, in its iconic Championship White paint, I couldn’t help but think of how rare these cars are (483), and how many are left in this condition with a factory painted white roof?
As you fire up this Honda NSX R, there is no drama or overwhelming exhaust note. At the press of a button, the air conditioning system engages and quickly cools the cabin. The red Alcantara covered carbon kevlar seats hold you firmly in place and offer excellent support. Commence the drive and you realize there is no power steering but it does not matter, the steering lightens up as soon as the car begins to move. The communicative steering complements the short throw gear shift amazingly well, and driving on the right side of the car becomes second nature fairly quickly. As you accelerate, you quickly begin to understand how impressive this car is. In a straight line the car comes alive at the top of the rev range, unsurprisingly so given the VTEC-engine. Experience the progression of power while driving on a winding road, upshift, and place the car right on the white line and it all comes together. This is an extremely well balanced canyon carving surgical instrument, not a sledge hammer. The NSX R can be used to run errands around town and offers the civility of many modern sports cars; however, this car belongs on a closed circuit track where it can really be used in the way it was intended. I truly believe this car will not disappoint.
